PITTSBURGH (TCD) -- A 26-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder and other counts after he allegedly stabbed a 41-year-old man who was on his honeymoon.
In a statement, Pittsburgh Police said they responded to the Even Hotel at 425 Forbes Ave. on July 24 at approximately 7 p.m. because a man had been assaulted in the hotel lobby. When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the victim "unresponsive and bleeding profusely from severe trauma to his head."
Medics transported him to a local hospital in critical condition.
Pittsburgh Police officers located the suspect, Heiko-Lamar Calhoun, on the 400 block of Smithfield Street and arrested him for criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, and recklessly endangering another person.
Surveillance footage from the hotel reportedly shows Calhoun kicking and stomping on Gilmore and hitting his head against the ground. He allegedly put Gilmore in a chokehold.
WTAE reports Gilmore’s pants had been removed.
Shalawrae told WTAE, "I just saw someone in the middle of the street saying a woman is being stomped inside of the hotel. I tried to call my husband to let him know something was going on. He didn’t answer, which is abnormal, so I walked over and when I went in, I seen him lying in a puddle of blood."
WPXI-TV reports Gilmore and his wife have three children and she is currently pregnant. Calhoun allegedly told police he attacked Gilmore because the victim made a comment about castrating him. Gilmore and Calhoun, who is homeless, did not know each other prior to the attack.
Gilmore reportedly was conscious at the hospital Wednesday, July 26.
