MADISON, Wis. (TCD) -- Police are reportedly looking into the death of a 9-month-old girl who was allegedly left unattended by an adult and died after someone stepped on her head.
On Monday, Jan. 31, Madison Police Department officers and emergency medical personnel from the Madison Fire Department went to an apartment on the 7900 block of Tree Lane at 7:42 p.m. for reports of an injured infant. According to a Madison Police Department statement, they located the 9-month-old girl and said she did not survive.
In an update to the statement, Madison Police said the Special Victims Unit is looking into the case as part of a "very active investigation."
The next day, when the baby was injured, the 9-year-old reportedly told police she went to pour herself a glass of water and left the baby on the floor. She allegedly forgot the little girl was on the floor, and according to the Wisconsin State Journal, stepped on the girl’s head.
The girl reportedly ran next door to a neighbor, who then called police.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports the baby died at 9:25 p.m. at University of Wisconsin Hospital. Her cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Police are reportedly looking into the adult woman’s whereabouts and when she was at the apartment. A witness allegedly told police the adult woman asked her to lie to police and tell them the witness was watching the children. The adult, however, reportedly said she thought the children would either go to the neighbor’s apartment or the neighbor would come over to her unit to watch the kids.
The adult has not been formally charged yet, but investigators are reportedly looking into possible neglect.
