S.C. man gets 40 years for killing mom, grandmother; said he was 'looking for Lucifer'

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (TCD) -- A man was sentenced Thursday to 40 years in prison after he reportedly stabbed and shot his mother and grandmother to death.

The Anderson County 10th Circuit Solicitor’s Office announced Bradley Aldrich pleaded guilty but mentally ill to two counts of first, one count of attempted murder, and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

In the early hours of May 6, 2018, Aldrich allegedly shot Shane Massey in the chest with a .22 caliber handgun. Massey is reportedly a convicted drug dealer, and the two reportedly know each other "through mutual drug use." the Solicitor’s Office said. Aldrich was reportedly on drugs when he shot Massey and "spoke of two devils living inside him."

Massey survived the shooting and was treated for his injuries.

Later that day, Aldrich’s cousin found Aldrich’s mother and grandmother dead in a bedroom at 110 Overbrook St. Aldrich’s mother, 50-year-old Theresa Wright, was on the floor and was stabbed, beaten, strangled, and shot. The solicitor’s office says his grandmother, 79-year-old Judith Calvert, was in bed and suffered stab and gunshot wounds.

Toxicology reports showed both victims had methamphetamine in their systems.

Aldrich reportedly lived in a tent behind the Overbrook Street residence. The Solicitor’s Office said Aldrich was initially taken into custody on attempted murder charges relating to the Massey shooting. When asked about his mother and grandmother’s deaths, he reportedly told investigators Massey did it and that’s why he shot him.

The statement says Aldrich "had been 'looking for Lucifer' after shooting methamphetamine and cocaine all day, and he had only found his mother and grandmother dead."

Aldrich reportedly told police if they found his DNA on the victims' bodies, then he did it. Aldrich’s DNA was located in fingernail scrapings of both his grandmother and mother, which could be a sign of a struggle. His jeans and jacket had the victims' blood on them, too.

He was arrested and booked into the Anderson County Jail.
