Infant dies after being left in hot car outside Memphis day care center

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (TCD) -- An infant passed away after being left inside of a hot car, which was parked at a day care center for several hours.
According to the Memphis Police Department, on Thursday, May 19, officers were sent to 975 Thomas Street for a report of a child in a car. The infant was taken to Le Bonheur Hospital in critical condition, but he was later pronounced dead. Police say one person has been detained, but did not identify them.
WREG-TV reports the victim was a 1-year-old boy who was in the backseat of a vehicle at Education Is The Key Children's Center in North Memphis. A day care worker allegedly picked up the child on their way to work and forgot he was in the car. The child was in the car between 8:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
Police did not clarify the relationship between the victim and the person detained.
According to WMC-TV, the weather Thursday reached 91 degrees, which means the inside of the car could be 130 degrees or more. Video provided by WMC showed a black Nissan SUV being driven away by a tow truck from the scene.
On Friday, May 20, Memphis Police shared a public service announcement reminding people to "NEVER leave a child or pet alone in the car." The PSA offered some tips, such as creating "reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child or pet."
