Texas man sentenced to life for fatally shooting stranger who looked at his girlfriend

PLANO, Texas (TCD) -- A 25-year-old man was recently sentenced to life in prison after fatally shooting a stranger in 2021 because he allegedly looked at his girlfriend.

According to a news release from the Collin County District Attorney’s Office, on July 7, 2021, Steven Gambles II was headed to the Shops of Legacy to meet a friend for dinner when a "complete stranger," Jordan Jacobs, passed him outside of the Mini Mart. Jacobs reportedly told his girlfriend he was going to rob Gambles because he was looking at her.

Jacobs went back to his home, changed into a long-sleeve security jacket, dark pants, and a mask as a disguise and circled around the Shops of Legacy waiting for Gambles, the D.A.’s Office said.

Surveillance video revealed Jacobs entering Gambles’ vehicle and stealing a firearm in the console. According to the D.A.’s Office, Gambles came back to his car and Jacobs pointed the stolen gun toward Gambles’ head and fired. Gambles was shot in the temple.

On Oct. 5, the D.A.’s Office announced a jury found Jacobs guilty of capital murder. He was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a statement, "An innocent man was out enjoying dinner with a friend when his life was taken by a violent stranger." He called the incident a "senseless and terrible crime."
