Alabama man accused of burning mom's body on Mother's Day found competent, denied bond

DOTHAN, Ala. (WHNT/AP) -- A south Alabama man charged with killing his mother and burning her body has been found mentally competent for trial.
Kale E. Kirkland, Ph.D., an Alabama licensed psychologist, determined 36-year-old Chad Brogdon can understand the legal system. But the expert wrote that Brogdon has a long history of drug abuse.
Brogdon allegedly killed his mother, Penny Wilson Newton, at her Level Plains home on Mother's Day in 2019.
The Dothan Eagle reports on May 14, 2019, around 5 p.m., fishermen spotted a burning vehicle underneath the bridge near Hartford. Authorities discovered what appeared to be a body inside the vehicle, but indicated it was burned beyond recognition. Police believe Brogdon killed his mother and took her body in the vehicle to Geneva County, where he set the vehicle on fire.
Dale County Circuit Judge William Fillmore denied bond for Brogdon, whose trial is set for Sept. 14. Brogdon has pleaded not guilty to murder and corpse abuse.
