Texas woman allegedly offered mother $500k to buy her baby in Walmart checkout line

CROCKETT, Texas (TCD) -- A 49-year-old woman stands accused of offering a mother $500,000 to purchase her baby in a Walmart checkout line last week.

According to KPRC-TV, Rebecca Taylor approached a mother’s shopping cart in the checkout line while she was carrying her two kids.

According to the affidavit obtained by KETK-TV, Taylor made comments about her son’s blond hair and blue eyes, asking how much she could purchase him for. The mother reportedly thought it was a joke at first and tried to laugh it off. KETK reports that Taylor then told the mother that she had $250,000 to pay for him, and the mother declined the offer.

According to KETK, Taylor told the mother she had been wanting to purchase a baby for a while, and the mother told her to stay away from her son. Taylor was reportedly with another woman at the time, and the second woman asked the mother what the child’s name was, but the mother did not answer. However, KETK reports that Taylor and the other woman were still able to call out the child’s name.

The mother headed to her car after waiting for the two women to leave, KETK says. In the parking lot, Taylor reportedly began yelling at the mother that she would give her $500,000 and that she was going to "take him."

The mother reportedly locked her children in her vehicle as Taylor waited behind a black SUV next to the mother’s car. Taylor allegedly continued saying she wanted the son and was willing to pay $500,000 for him.

Eventually, KETK reports that Taylor left in the black SUV, and the mother and her two children were able to safely leave before alerting authorities. Surveillance video from Walmart reportedly matched the mother’s description of what had happened.

Taylor was arrested and charged on Tuesday, Jan. 18, with sale or purchase of a child, a third-degree felony in Texas. According to KPRC, She was released Thursday, Jan. 20, from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office on a $50,000 bond.
