CARY, Ill. (TCD) -- A jury recently convicted a 38-year-old woman of battering her elderly mother, causing a severe injury to her face in late 2022.
On Tuesday, Nov. 14, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office announced that a jury found Rebecca Wise guilty of one count of aggravated domestic battery causing great bodily harm and two counts of aggravated battery of a victim 60 years or older.
Assistant State’s Attorneys Jacki Kliment and Amanda Busljeta argued in court that on Nov. 22, 2022, Wise went into her mother’s home and kicked her in the face, causing a break in her orbital bone. The state’s attorney’s office noted that Wise’s mother was over 60 years old at the time of the attack.
Wise is scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 13 for her sentencing and faces three to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections or up to 48 months of probation.
In a statement, Kliment said, "Relationships within families can be difficult at times. However, a tumultuous relationship with a family member is never an excuse to physically harm someone."
Kliment continued, "The victim showed immense courage in confronting her daughter in court and finally getting the chance to tell her side of the story. My thanks to ASA Busljeta and victim advocate Sheila Gray for their outstanding work on this case."
