Other law enforcement officials, including the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division, Nevada State Fire Marshal investigators, and forensic investigators from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the home and ruled Fitak’s death a homicide.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office alleged the blaze had been "intentionally set in an attempt to conceal the crime."
The Sheriff’s Office soon identified Fitak’s boyfriend, Roger Borud, as the primary suspect.
On July 15, deputies arrested Borud on charges of burglary, home invasion, and probation violation for an unrelated case. The next day, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division arrested him on charges of open murder and first-degree arson in connection with Fitak’s alleged slaying.
