The District Attorney’s Office alleges the victim’s ex-boyfriend, Jovanni Sirio-Cardona, "approached the home unannounced, forced entry into the trailer through a bedroom window, and shot the victim several times."
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KUSA-TV, when Sirio-Cardona entered the home, Silva-Lopez told her brother to run. The brother reportedly attempted to call 911, but the call did not go through. While that was happening, Sirio-Cardona allegedly made his way into the home and fatally shot Silva-Lopez.
Sirio-Cardona reportedly saw the brother and forced him to give up his phone to prevent him from dialing 911. Sirio-Cardona fled the scene with the brother’s phone.
KUSA reports police went to Sirio-Cardona’s home, and when his grandmother asked what was going on, Sirio-Cardona "replied by saying he did what he had to do and he shot someone."
The suspect allegedly dated the victim for around six months, but Silva-Lopez attempted to end their relationship four weeks before the fatal shooting.
The victim’s mother reportedly told police Sirio-Cardona had placed "the barrel of a gun in Silva-Lopez’s mouth" and "told Silva-Lopez she wasn’t going to break up with him, and she needed to tell him she loved him."
Prior to the shooting, police responded to Silva-Lopez’s home on June 10 after Sirio-Cardona allegedly punched her in the face and injured her arm, KUSA reports.
The suspect had also reportedly walked around the exterior of his ex-girlfriend’s home on Tuesday, June 13, and Wednesday, June 14, which was caught on camera.
The District Attorney’s Office charged Sirio-Cardona with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, aggravated robbery, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. His bond was set at $2 million, and he is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 3.
