SHREVEPORT, La. (TCD) -- A jury reached a verdict in a matter of minutes and found a 37-year-old man guilty of killing his "romantic rival" by stabbing him in the chest while he slept.
In a statement, the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office announced Cortney Taylor was convicted Tuesday, May 23, for second-degree murder for the death of Derrick Dewayne Taylor (no relation). The jury reportedly came to the unanimous decision in 30 minutes.
On Sept. 7, 2020, Cortney Taylor went to his ex-girlfriend's apartment on Marion Street in Shreveport and found her sleeping next to 46-year-old Derrick Taylor. Cortney took a knife and stabbed Derrick in the heart, puncturing the right ventricle. He later bled to death.
Derrick's new girlfriend and Cortney's ex was sleeping at the time of the stabbing and reportedly did not see it, but surveillance footage showed Cortney entering and exiting the apartment. He fled Shreveport following the killing and was captured by U.S. Marshals in December 2020.
While in custody, he reportedly made a call on a jailhouse phone that his ex would not be able to testify against him because she was sleeping.
Cortney Taylor will be sentenced June 22 and faces life in prison without parole.
