Portland woman accused of breaking toddler’s wrist, putting popsicle stick in her eye

PORTLAND, Ore. (TCD) -- A 19-year-old woman faces assault and several other charges after she allegedly injured her fiancée’s 2-year-old daughter while taking care of her.
According to Multnomah County court records, Shanairian Perkins is charged with one count of first-degree assault, three counts of third-degree assault, two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment, and one count of recklessly endangering another person in connection with incidents that allegedly occurred between May 3 and May 5.
KATU-TV, which cites court documents, reports residents at an apartment building on NE 102nd Avenue called Portland Police after hearing what sounded like "skin-to-skin" slaps. Police went to the apartment and found the 2-year-old child with bruises on her stomach and back, blood in her eye, and other injuries on her body.
Perkins allegedly told police at first the girl got scratched up while playing at a fountain and that other injuries were caused by heat rash. KATU reports Perkins said she gave the little girl “loving squeezes” a little too hard.
The child was taken to Randall Children’s Hospital and a doctor determined she sustained severe trauma to her abdomen as well as bruising on her jaw, arms, legs, thighs, and a broken wrist. When she spoke with police again, Perkins reportedly said she broke the girl’s wrist by pulling her out of a bathtub and that she poked her in the eye with a popsicle stick. Perkins also allegedly covered the child’s mouth when she screamed.
She is currently being held without bail in the Multnomah County Jail.
