Mathews reportedly hit her in the face, "causing significant injury," and began to rape her.
According to Powers, a bystander called for help, and Forest Park Police officers arrived at the scene and saw Mathews assaulting the victim. Mathews reportedly fled but was taken into custody after a short pursuit.
Powers announced Monday, May 8, that Mathews was indicted on two counts of rape, one count of kidnapping, and one count of felonious assault. He faces a maximum sentence of 22 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
In a statement, Powers said, "This man stalked and brutally attacked a total stranger. What happened to this victim is horrifying. I am so thankful to the witness who called 911 and the police officers’ quick response that saved this victim’s life."
