BOCA RATON, Fla. (TCD) -- A judge ordered a 24-year-old man to serve two life sentences in prison for killing a 75-year-old woman and lighting her body on fire after delivering appliances at her home.
The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday, April 5, that Jorge Dupre Lachazo also received 30 years on top of his murder conviction life sentences for arson for killing Evelyn Udell.
According to the Palm Beach Post, Circuit Judge Daliah Weiss said at Lachazo’s sentencing, "This was a harmless woman in her mid-70s. A wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend to so many people. A woman who had a life well lived with honor, full of love, compassion — anything that you’d want in a person. That much is clear."
On Aug. 19, 2019, at 9:15 a.m., Boca Raton Police and Fire responded to a residence in the Colonnade at Glen Oaks and found a female unconscious with burns and trauma injuries. Officials transported her to the Delray Medical Center. She died from her wounds the next day.
Boca Raton Police learned Lachazo and another driver delivered a washer and dryer from Best Buy at Udell’s home. The other driver went outside and Lachazo stayed in the home to explain how the new appliances worked. The driver reportedly heard screaming and when he went inside, he found a bloodied Udell on the ground.
Lachazo drove off as the other driver called 911. A Boca Raton Police officer responding to the scene saw the delivery truck and stopped it. Lachazo told the officer he "struck the victim and doused her with a liquid chemical."
He also reportedly admitted to using marijuana and cocaine that day.
The Palm Beach Post reports Lachazo told police voices told him he needed to kill Udell, then switched to saying he was being extorted.
He reportedly told police when he was being arrested, "I’m a bad person. I want to die. Use that pistol already. Use it already. Disappear me."
Udell’s son, Harran, told Lachazo at the sentencing hearing, "With any luck, the prison justice we see in movies will be visited upon you."
