Georgia grandmother sentenced to life for 'poisoning' infant grandson with meth

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) -- A grandmother was recently sentenced to life in prison for the death of her 9-month-old grandson, who died in 2016.

The Sandy Springs Police Department announced that on March 11, 2016, the 9-month-old infant died and arrest warrants were obtained for the grandmother, Tonya Monroe. She reportedly went on the run following the infant’s death.

A toxicology report showed that the victim, Kobe Shaw, died of a methamphetamine overdose, WAGA-TV reports.

Prosecutors argued that the victim, who suffered a rare genetic disorder, was "poisoned" by his grandmother, and she "acted with malice and intent to harm the child," WSB-TV reports.

After the infant died, Monroe reportedly tried to make it look like her grandson suffocated.

U.S. Marshals reportedly found Monroe, who made her way across Georgia and Alabama.

On Nov. 14, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office announced that Monroe was found guilty of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, first-degree cruelty to children, and distribution of methamphetamine.

On Tuesday, Dec. 6, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis reportedly said that Monroe was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to WSB, Willis said, "After two trials over six years, I’m proud that we were able to get justice for the murder of this precious child."

Monroe remains held in the Fulton County Jail, records show.
