LAS VEGAS (TCD) -- A 36-year-old aunt was arrested and charged in connection with the death of her 5-year-old nephew.
On June 29, a 5-year-old child, Nizay Evans, was brought to a hospital because he was having issues breathing, and he later succumbed to his injuries, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports. The child reportedly suffered abuse and died of blunt force head trauma.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told KSNV-TV the child had bruises on his body, cuts around his eye, and apparent burn scars on his legs.
Upon further investigation, authorities reportedly learned Krystle Evans, the boy’s aunt, had full guardianship of him and three of his siblings because their parents were in jail. According to KSNV, Evans has three children of her own and all of them lived with the children’s grandparents.
Evans was interviewed and allegedly said the boy seemed fine the day before he went to the hospital. She told police he drank ginger ale in the morning and when he laid down on the floor, he started gasping for air, KSNV reports.
Evans reportedly called 911 and performed CPR until authorities arrived.
Police interviewed the other children in the home, and they said Evans had beaten them with a belt and toy bat, according to KSNV. A child also reportedly told police that before he went to the hospital, the victim got in trouble because he took beverages from their grandmother’s room.
One of the children allegedly had multiple bruises on their ears, collarbone, and left arm. Another child reportedly had broken blood vessels in one eye from an alleged slap. That child also had a bruise on the forehead and leg, and scars on the neck, back, and leg, KSNV reports.
Evans was arrested and charged with murder and four counts of child abuse, records show. She is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 7.
