MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (TCD) -- A former high-level anti-abortion activist was arrested in early August as part of a sting operation regarding crimes against children.
According to the Montgomery County Courier, Lucas "Luke" Bowen was taken into custody Aug. 3 for online solicitation of a minor. That same day, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said there was a "heavy law enforcement presence" in Conroe, where Bowen reportedly lives.
Prior to his arrest, Bowen served as the political director for Texas Right to Life.
The criminal complaint cited by the Montgomery County Courier alleges Bowen "knowingly" solicited "through a commercial online service, P. Minchew, a minor, to meet the Defendant, with the intent that, P. Minchew, would engage in sexual contact or sexual intercourse or deviate sexual intercourse with the Defendant."
Bowen's attorney told the newspaper, "This investigation revolves around a fictitious alleged minor created by law enforcement and posted on the Internet. There is not a real victim in the case."
The Houston Chronicle reports Bowen's arrest was part of a sting operation run by the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.
Texas Right to Life's media and communications director told the Houston Chronicle, "Luke Bowen's employment was terminated on August 3."
Bowen reportedly pleaded not guilty and was released after posting bond. If convicted, he could spend up to 20 years in prison and be ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.
