SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (TCD) -- A 49-year-old man was arrested for allegedly faking his own kidnapping last week in what police say was an attempt to garner his estranged wife’s sympathy.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, on June 16, Luis Umanzor called police to report he had been abducted earlier that day by three men in the parking lot outside 1700 Veterans Memorial Highway. Umanzor reportedly claimed three unknown men "put a bag over his head, forced him into a car, and kept him at an unspecified location against his will for several hours."
He said the men later dropped him off at a hospital when they set him free.
Suffolk Police conducted an investigation into Umanzor’s alleged kidnapping and brought him in for questioning on June 18. He reportedly told police he lied about his abduction "in an attempt to gain favor with his estranged spouse."
Umanzor was booked on charges of falsely reporting an incident and making an apparently sworn statement.
Suffolk Police say he was released on a desk appearance ticket.
