Louisiana mom arrested after infant dies following 'severe head trauma'

COVINGTON, La. (TCD) -- A 28-year-old mother was taken into custody after her infant son died from alleged abuse.
According to the Covington Police Department, on March 23, officers responded to a local hospital after receiving information that a 6-month-old child came to the emergency room with "severe head trauma." The child was taken to another hospital that had "more advanced care."
Investigators reportedly believe the child's injuries "occurred at the hands of his mother," Madelyn Abisai Mejia-Gallo. The little boy died from his injuries days later on March 26. Mejia-Gallo was arrested in New Orleans and transported to the Orleans Parish Prison as a fugitive from her hometown of Covington.
Mejia-Gallo has been charged with second-degree murder.
According to WVUE-TV, Mejia-Gallo could face life in prison if convicted.
