According to Detroit Police, a family member of one of the victims went to the residence on the 15300 block of Evergreen because they had not heard from the victim in several days. When the family member arrived, police said that person "ended up discovering their loved one, his girlfriend, and her 5-year-old deceased in the house from apparent gunshot wounds."
Police arrived at the scene and began an investigation. Community tips helped police apprehend the two suspects, who were not named because of their age. Commander Michael McGinnis said during the press conference, "There is high confidence that the individuals that we are taken into custody are responsible for this heinous act."
Detroit Police Chief James White spoke in front of the house where the victims were found on Sunday, Feb. 20, and said the family member, who had not talked to the victims in over a week, found the back door open and "possibly kicked in."
WJBK-TV identified the victims as Aaron Benson, Lashon Marshall, and her 5-year-old son Caleb Harris. McGinnis said Caleb was only five days away from celebrating his sixth birthday when he was found.
