DALTON, Ga. (TCD) -- A former teacher and coach allegedly traveled from his home to meet with someone who he believed would be a female minor under the age of 16 for sex acts.
According to the Daily Citizen-News of Dalton, 36-year-old Michael David Powers messaged an investigator posting as a girl under 16 years old on a social media website. The contact was reportedly sexual in nature, as Powers allegedly detailed the sex acts he wanted to perform with her. Additionally, the Daily Citizen-News of Dalton reports that Powers sent sexually explicit photos and requested sexual content from the undercover investigator, threatening to expose their conversations if she did not comply.
According to the Daily Citizen-News of Dalton, Powers allegedly traveled from Whitfield County where he worked as a teacher, coach, and mandated reporter to Floyd County to meet with the girl.
According to records, on Tuesday, Jan. 18, Powers was arrested and charged with aggravated child molestation, electronically furnishing obscene material to minors, use of a computer service to seduce, solicit, lure or entice a child to commit an illegal act, and obscene internet contact with a child and sexual exploitation of children. He remains held in the Floyd County Jail without bail.
Powers reportedly began working as a science teacher at Coahulla Creek in August 2011 and also coached in Whitfield County in the past.
