DELTONA, Fla. (TCD) -- A 15-year-old girl allegedly stole more than $15,000 from her grandparents’ safe and ran away from home.
According to a press release from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, on Friday, Jan. 7, the girl’s grandparents noticed that their safe had been opened and all $15,640 in cash was gone. The grandparents reportedly suspected that their granddaughter stole the money and disclosed to authorities that she has a history of theft, drug use, and running away.
The 15-year-old girl was reportedly found by deputies on Saturday, Jan. 8, at a Deltona gas station. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the teen admitted to stealing the money and told authorities that she had spent a portion of it and had given away thousands, "including $6,000 to her friend’s mom."
Upon further investigation, the Sheriff’s Office says 39-year-old Anna Marie Sikora of Deltona told authorities that she accepted $4,000 in November 2021 from the teen girl even though she knew the money belonged to her grandparents.
Sikora was arrested and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on Saturday, Jan. 8. She was released on $2,500 bond Sunday, Jan. 9.
The 15-year-old granddaughter was charged with burglary and grand theft. According to the Sheriff’s Office, she was released with a future court date by the Department of Juvenile Justice.
