ST. PAUL, Minn. (TCD) -- A 38-year-old man was taken into custody for allegedly beating his mother to death at their home early Wednesday morning in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood.
According to the St. Paul Police Department, officers responded to a residence on the 600 block of Cook Avenue East at approximately 4 a.m. Wednesday where they discovered a "disturbing scene." Police found a woman in her 60s who had been "badly beaten" and remained unresponsive. Pioneer Press reports the 911 caller said a man beating his mother was "out of control."
The department said Friday the Ramsey County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 61-year-old Sonja L. Olson.
Olson's 38-year-old son Christopher Olson was in the house when police showed up and was "identified as a suspect," police said. Davis said St. Paul Police detained Christopher Olson and booked him into the Ramsey County Jail for second-degree murder.
KARE-TV, citing the criminal complaint, reports Christopher Olson was "covered in blood and crouching over a deceased female in the entry way." Sonja Olson allegedly had a knife handle stuck in her hair and a broken knife blade under her head. He reportedly had two warrants out for his arrest — one in Ramsey County and another in Dakota County.
According to KSTP-TV, Sonja Olson died from blood loss due to stab wounds to her face as well as blunt force injuries.
