Man convicted of killing, dismembering Tinder date seeks to defend himself in death penalty appeal

LINCOLN, Neb. (TCD) -- A 55-year-old man who was convicted of killing and dismembering his 24-year-old Tinder date in November 2017 is now hoping to defend himself in his death sentence appeal.

According to the Omaha World-Herald, Aubrey Trail wanted to sell $25,000 in antiques and rare coins and donate the money to a fund created in memory of his victim, Sydney Loofe. Trail and his girlfriend Bailey Boswell, however, reportedly owe $400,000 in restitution to a couple they scammed.

The World-Herald reports Trail, as with anyone sentenced to death in Nebraska, has an automatic appeal to the death sentence. His attorneys are reportedly trying to overturn the death penalty sentence. Trail wrote in an email to the paper, "They are forcing me to make the first appeal but as soon as that is done I will force them to set an execution date if I can."

Trail said he "did it" and is guilty, adding, "I’m not looking to win on a technicality."

Trail was sentenced to death by lethal injection June 9. According to the World-Herald, Boswell was also convicted and will learn November 8 whether she will face life in prison or get the death sentence. If she is sentenced with the latter, she would become the first woman in Nebraska sentenced to death.

Loofe’s body was found in Clay County in December 2017 and was reportedly dismembered and put in several trash bags. Loofe reportedly went on a Tinder date with Boswell on November 14 and November 15, the last day she was seen alive.

According to The Associated Press, Trail said during his trial that he killed Loofe because she "freaked out" about his lifestyle, which reportedly involved scamming people and group sex.
