COVINGTON, La. (TCD) -- A 40-year-old man was arrested over the weekend after police say he kidnapped his girlfriend at knifepoint in Largo, Florida, and drove to Louisiana, where he threatened and beat her.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, a motorist driving on Highway 190 called 911 when she saw a woman who "appeared to be in distress" sitting in the backseat of a car. The distressed woman then called deputies after she reportedly climbed out of the car’s window and ran away.
The victim, who was not named, reportedly told St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies that her boyfriend Jay Langford threatened to "kill her and dump her body on some dead-end street."
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said the woman told deputies that she and her boyfriend had been staying in a residence off Highway 1078 in Covington since their arrival September 12. The victim reportedly said Langford kidnapped her September 11 and started threatening her September 18.
On Sunday, deputies spotted Langford’s car driving on Highway 1078 heading back towards his residence. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said Langford sped away when he saw the patrol car. Langford was eventually taken into custody after a "brief, high-speed pursuit."
St. Tammany Parish Jail inmate records indicate he was booked on charges of domestic abuse battery, simple assault, aggravated flight from officer, and possession of a schedule IV substance (Xanax).
