MIAMI (TCD) --
A 10-year-old Florida boy was hospitalized after he was shot, then run over by his father’s vehicle, when he fired a paintball gun from the vehicle Sunday night.
Opa-Locka Police responded to a shooting on the 2300 block of Rutland Street on Sunday night, May 30. Police said a 10-year-old boy was shot.
The Miami Herald reports the 10-year-old boy asked his father to drive him to the Rutland Street house so he could do a “drive-by shooting” with his rifle-style paintball gun.
The boy’s father, identified as 26-year-old Michael Williams, drove his van past the house, and the boy fired paintballs into a crowd of people in the front yard. Other people also were reportedly in the van.
The resident of the house later told police he believed “he and his family were under attack,” the Herald reports. The man fired a real gun, striking the 10-year-old.
The 10-year-old then lost his balance, according to police, and was run over by his father’s van.
Michael Williams allegedly drove his son back to their house, where the boy’s mother dialed 911, according to police.
The boy was hospitalized in unknown condition, but was reportedly expected to recover. Another 10-year-old, who was standing in the front yard, was also hospitalized, WTVJ-TV reports.
Michael Williams was charged with child neglect with great bodily harm.
