7-Eleven clerk chased suspected thief, ran him over with his car, left scene: Police

Ronald James Kirkham is charged with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, failure to remain at and leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury.

SALT LAKE CITY (KSTU) -- An employee at a Salt Lake City 7-Eleven store has been arrested on suspicion of running over a retail theft suspect with his car.

According to a probable cause statement, Ronald James Kirkham, 60, attempted to stop the suspect who fled the store on foot Tuesday. Kirkham got into his personal vehicle and followed the suspect in an attempt to detain him for police.

Kirkham “struck the retail theft suspect (victim) with his vehicle, driving over his legs, and then proceeded to crash the vehicle into the neighboring home, causing severe structural damage,” the statement said. Kirkham then left the scene with his vehicle and called 911.

Kirkham was booked at the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, failure to remain at and leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury.
