MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) -- A 21-year-old Mitchell woman has been arrested in connection with a homicide of a 5-year-old boy, the Mitchell Department of Public Safety announced.

According to Mitchell authorities, a 5-year-old boy was not breathing when he was brought to the emergency room at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 23. Life-saving measures were performed but the boy was declared dead.

An autopsy determined the child died as a result of significant blunt-force trauma to the abdomen, and the death was ruled a homicide, police said. Carter allegedly told police that she kicked the 5-year-old about five times in the stomach and stomped on his abdomen. Police said Carter and the child lived at the same residence.

Carter is charged with first-degree manslaughter and abuse/cruelty to a minor.
