Nashville mother accused of trying to smother infant son in the hospital

NASHVILLE -- (WZTV) -- Metro Nashville Police said a young Nashville mother was indicted by a grand jury for trying to smother her 5-month-old son.

According to the MNPD, 22-year-old Alexis Bagwell was arrested at her home on Chapel Avenue for possible charges including one count of attempted murder and three counts of aggravated child abuse.

Bagwell's son is currently healthy and in foster care.

Staff at Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital first became suspicious of Bagwell while her son was being treated for a seizure issue in January 2016. Police said staff came into Josiah's room twice for issues while he was alone with his mother.

One of those issues caused Josiah to stop breathing. Another time, Bagwell told hospital staff that he stopped breathing, which turned out to be untrue.

Detectives said her actions were an unsuccessful attempt to smother her son.

One count handed down by the grand jury claims she abused her son when he was 2-months-old and a patient at Vanderbilt.
