CHICAGO -- A rape victim advocacy group is launching a nationwide campaign to highlight what it calls the "appalling treatment of rape kit evidence."
There are 2,000 untested rape kits in Illinois.
In Chicago it takes 12 to 24 months to get a kit tested. In that time, the victim is going through incredible emotional stress and the perpetrator could be committed more rapes.
Today, every governor in the country -- including Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner -- will be mailed a symbolic rape kit with a tracking bar code on it.
Just like you track a post office or UPS packages, a rape kit could be tracked to see what part of the process it’s in.
Organizers of the ”Just Track it Campaign" hope tracking the kits will bring awareness to the back log of tests, and get them done faster.
It’s estimated there are 400,000 untested rape kits in this country. Only three out of 100 rapists will see jail time.
The group Test400k says the quicker the tests get done, the better chance of a perpetrator going to prison.
